Training and education
- Graduated with honours from University of Glasgow, 1977
- Training posts in the west of Scotland, 1977 to 1984
- Lecturer and senior lecturer (honorary consultant) at the University of Leeds, 1984 to 1993.
Experience
Professor Primrose has worked for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since October 1993. He has over 20 years of experience as a consultant, principally in cancer surgery, and now with a focus on surgery of the liver.
Key achievements
- Development of hepatobiliary (HPB) services in Southampton to create one of the largest HPB service units in the UK. The unit sees approximately 250 major HPB cases per year, including 100 liver operations annually.
- Successful national bid to CRUK (2006) for clinical trials unit infrastructure.
- Awarded six clinical fellows and three clinical lecturers in a national bid for “Walport” posts.
- Appointed director of the Comprehensive Local Research Network in 2007, the principle means by which NHS research and development funding is delivered.

- Numerous UK and international awards.
- Honorary member of the Association of Surgeons of India
- Visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh.
Research
- Over 150 publications, mainly on gastrointestinal cancer.
- Chief Investigator of five current major research grants from CRUK and the NHS Health Technology Assessment Programme.
