My story begins towards the end of 2020 when I started suffering from Acid Reflux. As my dad had died from stomach cancer, I went along to see my GP and following a Poo sample, which was clear, and an endoscopy, which recorded no worrying features, I thought I was ok.

However, in October 2021, I felt decidedly unwell and saw my Dr. on 8th November. His diagnosis was that I was suffering from ‘Post Covid Fatigue’ and he recommended a certain course of exercises. I insisted on a blood test which I had at 08:30am on Friday 21st November. At 6.15pm that same day, I received a telephone call from a GP at my surgery telling me to go immediately to SGH, an emergency appointment had been made for me to have a blood transfusion. By this time, I was so ill my daughter and her husband had to virtually carry me into A&E.  I was kept in overnight and had the blood transfusion the next morning before being discharged.

On 30th November I had a Gastroscopy revealing no evidence of cancer in the lower bowel. Later, I underwent a Colonoscopy which revealed and I saw my bowel cancer. By this time I had lost 10 kilos in weight.

On 5th January 2022 I underwent a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test to check my fitness level and on 15th January I had an Intravenous Infusion of Iron.

On 18th January I had a Flexible Cystoscopy which confirmed my bladder cancer, following which, I saw the Surgeon. He informed me that both cancers would be removed during the same operation. He also said that if I had not been as fit as I was at my age 88 years he would not have operated.

I underwent a six-and-a-half-hour operation on 21st January and was discharged from SGH on 10th February.

Since my operations, I have had various blood tests which have revealed no colorectal cancer and I am awaiting a Colonoscopy to confirm this. I have also undergone numerous Cystoscopies to check my bladder and in September 2025 an abnormality was discovered during this procedure. This abnormality was removed by laser treatment and it’s success will be confirmed following a further Cystoscopy.
