In 2021, I got a call about a lung screening program for ex-smokers. The questions soon established that, as a teenager (who smoked a little in a failed attempt to look cool), I was not going to get the scan. However, the last question was ‘Have you ever worked with asbestos?’

I worked for a company of scientific glassblowers years ago (not as a glassblower) and spent time in the workshop. This workshop was full of asbestos. That just got me sufficient points to get the lung scan.

Lungs were as expected, so no action was required, but there was a note about something a bit odd in the pancreas. An abdominal scan was booked for me, and it found something odd, possibly worrying, and difficult to diagnose.

There were no symptoms that I noticed at all, so this was a huge surprise and shock. Several scans later, a NET was diagnosed, and I had a distal pancreatectomy as a result. Half my pancreas was removed in 2022. Since then, I have been living an almost normal life. Insulin injections are now a small part of my daily routine. I am extremely grateful for that lung scan. It meant that the tumour was found and removed successfully.
