Zaed Hamady MBChB, PhD, FRCS
Hunterian Professor 2011
Consultant HPB and General Surgeon

I qualified in Medicine with an MBChB from the University of Baghdad. Following that I moved to the UK and finished my basic surgical training. During this period I obtained the surgical membership of the three UK Royal Colleges. I started my clinical research training in Leeds where I was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship in 2005 and a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship in 2006 to carry out a research in genetic engineering of a human gut bacterium. The research period was productive and I have published and presented widely. My research project was the runner up for the Times Higher Education (THE) award in 2007. I was awarded a PhD in 2009 and Hunterian Professorship from the RCS (Eng.) in 2011. I have published more than 20 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, and collaborated with distiguished research experts from other UK and international institutes. During the research period I received training in kidney and liver transplant and I practised as an organ retrieval surgeon.

Since 2005, I have rotated as an Academic Specialist Registrar in the Yorkshire Deanery and I was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Leeds University to continue my academic and clinical training in HPB and transplant surgery. During this period, I have obtained a firm grounding in HPB benign and cancer surgical practice as well as liver transplant surgery. I aim to combine this with my laparoscopic skills to develop a niche in laparoscopic liver and pancreatic resections. I have gained experience in laparoscopic CBD exploration and I have developed an interest in the management of difficult CBD stones. I am experienced in ERCP and have the foundation for EUS. I am an independent multi-organ retrieval surgeon and I used to train new colleagues joining the unit. This skill has given me the confidence to perform complex hilar surgery. To further polish my skills, I attended the world renowned cancer centre, MSKCC, in New York as a visiting fellow.

During the last 2 years I was practicing as Consultant in HPB, Endoscopic and General surgery. I am responsible to look after patients with complex liver and pancreatic benign and malignant disease. I have special interest in laproscopic liver and pancreatic resections.
