There are two new clinical trials open in Southampton for NET patients.  The trials have strict entry criteria, so they won’t be suitable for everyone, but if you want to know more about these then please discuss with your consultant or your clinical nurse specialist.

The PEN-221 study is a really novel peptide-chemo drug conjugate (like PRRT basically, but with chemo instead of RT). All patients receive treatment, 3 weekly, IV.

Criteria include:

  • · Octreotide avid disease
  • · Midgut primary
  • · Grade 1 or 2
  • · No previous chemo

The NET-02 study. Is a randomised trial for patients with poorly differentiated extra-pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC grade 3). Patients are allocated to either docetaxel or liposomal irinotecan and 5-FU.

Criteria include:

  • ∙ Prior treatment with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy and ≥28 days from Day 1 of the previous treatment cycle
  • ∙ Documented radiological evidence of disease progression OR discontinuation of first-line platinum-based chemotherapy due to intolerance
  • ∙ Measurable disease according to RECIST 1.1
  • ∙ Eastern Co-operative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of ≤2

Whilst PLANETS is an independent patient support charity, we felt patients might like to be aware of what treatment research studies are being undertaken in our geographical locality. These studies may not be suitable for you but you may wish to discuss them with your doctors in case you might be an appropriate candidate. PLANETS is not in a position to offer advice on the suitability of any research project for patients but we hope that the links below may provide some helpful information. We have also provided a link to some other research studies going on around the country. We cannot guarantee that all research studies are included in these links so if you are interested, please always talk to the team looking after you to check if you might be a candidate for a research study. Please bear in mind that research studies are experimental and that a positive outcome is not guaranteed. It may be that tried and tested conventional therapies would be more suitable.
