PLANETS had a fantastic weekend at the first ever Bournemouth Marathon Festival, being represented in each of the four events.
The Supersonic 10k kicked the weekend off on Saturday afternoon with Kimmy Douglas putting in a strong performance (making it look easy), followed by Abby McCabe, Becks Green and Susan Goddard in the Speed of Light 5k which took place at dusk with all runners wearing LED armbands which was visually stunning with the pier and sea in the background. All three girls who took part in the 5k are pretty new to running so we are extremely grateful to them for taking themselves out of their comfort zones to raise money for the charity. Jo Green started early the next morning in the half marathon. It was a beautiful clear day so the 8am start proved to be fortunate as the sun rose. The half marathon took in a couple of hills and lots of long stretches on the beach front which proved challenging but Jo got round in her best time, ready to watch Jamie Cummings in the full marathon which started at 10am. By this time, the temperature was unseasonably warm which provided unfavourable conditions for the runners who had no shade for the whole route with it being mainly along the beach road, the hilly course only added to their pain! Jamie had suffered with injuries through training which coupled with the heat made it a tough run for him but he hung in there and finished in a very respectable time of 4hrs 37. After only making his final decision to run 2 weeks before race day, this was an amazing effort!
All runners were well supported by friends and family so this made for an enjoyable weekend of fundraising and a fantastic contribution to the PLANETS cause. The first Bournemouth Marathon Festival was a great success and entries are already being taken for next year (4th and 5th October). Perhaps next year it could be you?!
A big thank you to all our wonderful runners and also all the supporters that turned out to cheer them on and keep them going!
