With just days to go until riders set off on PLANETS Cancer Charity’s iconic London to Paris in 24 hours (LP24) challenge, fundraising has already exceeded £48,000.
The official LP24 JustGiving campaign has now raised £42,459, with a further £6,000 raised independently by one of the riders, taking the total fundraising effort to more than £48,000.
Organisers are now hoping to reach the £50,000 milestone as the event gets underway.
More than 50 riders, including cancer patients, clinicians, family members and supporters, will leave London on Friday (3 July) to tackle the 320km journey to Paris in just 24 hours as part of the event’s 10-year anniversary.
Alongside the physical challenge, supporters across the UK are also taking part in LP24 Virtual, completing the same distance in their own communities between 1 June and 5 July. Corporate teams from Goodwood, AWA, Care South, Peagreen and Spire Southampton Hospital are among those taking part.
The original LP24 challenge in 2016 saw 58 riders complete the journey from London to Paris, raising more than £65,000 towards the purchase of the Mobetron intraoperative radiotherapy machine at University Hospital Southampton.
Since then, PLANETS has raised more than £2.5 million to fund pioneering treatments, research, specialist equipment and enhanced support for people affected by pancreatic, liver, colorectal, oesophageal, gastric and neuroendocrine cancers.
Among those taking part again is Dr Brian Stedman, consultant interventional radiologist at University Hospital Southampton and co-founder of PLANETS.
He said: “LP24 has always been about bringing together patients, clinicians, families and supporters to achieve something extraordinary. To be taking part again as we celebrate the event’s tenth anniversary is incredibly special.
“To have already raised more than £48,000 before we’ve even reached the start line is fantastic.
“Every mile we ride and every pound donated will help PLANETS continue funding pioneering treatments, research and equipment that directly benefit cancer patients across our region.”
Jo Green, director of operations and marketing at PLANETS Cancer Charity, said: “The excitement is really building as we count down to the start of LP24. Our riders have spent months training for what will be an unforgettable challenge and the support from our community has been incredible.
“To have raised more than £48,000 before the event has even begun is a fantastic achievement, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us so far.
“There’s still time to help us reach our £50,000 target. Whether you donate to one of our riders, take part in LP24 Virtual or simply help spread the word, every contribution will make a real difference to patients and families affected by cancer.
