FUNDRAISING FOR A CURE

Donating is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with us and we will never sell them

Hampshire Open Studios is an annual art trail where the visiting public can meet artists in their homes, studios and galleries free of charge – 18-27th August 2018.  Local artist David Holt is selling his paintings during this event and has generously offered to donate 50% of any sale made to PLANETS.  His daughters shared this wonderful tribute to their Dad who is currently being looked after by the Southampton medical team:

Looking back over Dad’s life the need to create, make, and paint has been with him as long as he can remember. Probably having spent his early years in Chelsea with well known artists living in every street had a major influence on him at that time, as did his mother and father who were both creative.  However the need to get a ‘proper job’ found him working in the world of construction which gave him some freedom to design and draw. This was extremely satisfying in an architectural sense but after many years left him with the almost impossible task of shaking off the discipline of straight line accuracy and trying to free up.  Eventually he retired from the industry in 1999 and immediately decided to build a studio and get immersed in his painting.

Over the ensuing years his work has changed direction many times. This process slowly evolved to allow his emotions to take over therefore you will see a wide variety of styles and media and we guess, as he was not tied to a gallery he had can the freedom to continue in this way.  His paintings are, like his life, full of interest and never repetitive – from the conceptual /abstract to the loose representational, using oil or acrylic as a free flowing medium to bring movement, interest and emotion into his work. You will also see some gentle water colours as a contrast to some of his ‘heavy metal’ work.

Over the last 18 years Dad has enjoyed many hours immersed in his paintings until he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in February of this year. Dad was unable to tolerate the Chemotherapy offered to him and chose to have more quality of life rather than quantity of life. Unfortunately as Pancreatic cancer affects the digestion of food, eating soon became uncomfortable, weight loss ensued and his quality of life was reduced significantly. Despite this, all his efforts have been put towards mobilising his family and friends in to getting his studio ready for his Open Art Studio Event which is to open this weekend. Dad is part of the Hampshire Open Studio Event running over the next 10 days – more information about this can been seen on their website www.hampshireopenstudios.org.uk

Dad has requested that 50% of the proceeds go to PLANETS Cancer Charity to continue the great work that is being done in finding a cure. As we know Pancreatic Cancer is the hardest cancer to be diagnosed and the hardest cancer to be treated. Dad hopes the donations will make a difference to people diagnosed with this cancer in the future, saving more lives by improving treatment options.  Hope is a precious word and if hope can be given by finding an effective treatment through research then he urges you to visit his studio this weekend and consider purchasing his paintings and or post cards.  The other 50 % of the money raised from Dad’s paintings is going to another local charity – http://teenagedrop-inhedgeend.co.uk
