Pancreatic cancer affects over 8000 patients each year in the uk and remains the fifth biggest cancer killer in the UK, despite this its has been underfunded for many years and currently receives just 1% of total cancer research funding in the UK. NETs are a rare form of cancer often involving the liver and pancreas. They affect 3,000 patients per year in the UK, and can occur at any age with half of the patients we see being below 55yrs old.  PLANETS aim to improve patient services in these areas for all patients across the region.

“It is amazing to think that a little under 2 years ago PLANETS charity was just an idea discussed by two doctors over a coffee between cases at Southampton General Hospital. Since then PLANETS charity has been formed and we have been overwhelmed by the fantastic support and fundraising of people, near and far, who have given so much and whose lives in one way or another have been affected by Pancreatic, Liver and Neuroendocrine Tumours. It is therefore, with immense pleasure and pride that the PLANETS team can announce that the fundraising target for 2012, of £100,000 has been smashed! We are now totalling a staggering £144,000!

These donations however large or small really do make a difference and we have been able to buy the ultrasound scanner that was our first priority and also fund our tumour bank, looking into genetic and cellular research for these cancers.  We currently have the largest NET tumour bank in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.  We are now continuing to create our very own dedicated Hepato-Biliary and Pancreatic Centre of Excellence at Southampton which will serve the whole South Central region and every penny raised by PLANETS goes 100% towards these specific goals.

Other recent notable achievements are:

  • New comfortable chairs in outpatients – E & F Level
  • Radio-Isotope therapy ‘shielded box, isotope delivery system’.
  • Ward E8 bathrooms refit (including mirrors and sink enabling patients to easily wash their hair) to make a stay more comfortable
  • Slave Screen options in theatre 7 are being trialled
  • Employment of a full-time lab based researcher for preliminary analysis into genetic sequencing (relating to the tumour bank)
  • Collaboration with Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund into genetic sequencing.

We look forward to another successful year of fundraising and more achievements.

Thank you all for your continued support.”

Mr Neil Pearce DM, FRCS
