Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

Mr Tsang has performed over 3000 Cardiothoracic Operations in Southampton as primary surgeon since his appointment as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in 1999.  He performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. His major interest is in thoracic aortic surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair, and replacement. His interest in surgery to the aortic root, ascending, arch, descending and thoracoabdominal aorta dates back to his training in Birmingham with Professor Bonser. He is also an expert in coronary artery bypass grafting. He is one of two surgeons in Southampton who undertake both open and transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery (TAVI).

Mr Tsang’s personal operative results, and those of the Cardiac Unit at UHS, are available for public scrutiny at the Healthcare Commission website (www.heartsurgery.cqc.org.uk). His personal operative outcomes, and those of the cardiac unit at UHS, have consistently been significantly better than expected when adjusted for surgical and operative risk. They compare very favourably with other Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom.

Mr Tsang’s experience and results at Spire Southampton Hospital are available for scrutiny on the Spire Hospital website (www.spirehealthcare.com).  He has performed over 700 cardiac procedures at this hospital with a mortality rate less than 0.25% for all cases – despite a varied case mix. The outcomes for the Cardiac Surgical Group at Spire Southampton are especially outstanding considering the surgical and operative risk profiles of patients are equivalent to many much larger Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom. The risk adjusted surgical outcome data for Mr Tsang and the Cardiac Surgical group are consistently updated on the Spire Southampton website.

Professional and research interests

Until recently Mr Tsang was the Wessex Training Programme Director coordinating cardiothoracic trainees in both Southampton and Oxford. He remains as the Chairman of the Specialty Training Committee. He has recently been appointed as a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons.  He is an Examiner for the final FRCS (Cardiothoracic) Intercollegiate Examination.  In addition Mr Tsang has previously been the Clinical Service Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Southampton.

Since the Award of his MD thesis in 1996 Mr Tsang has had an ongoing interest in clinical research.  This has resulted in the publication of over 40 publications in the peer reviewed literature.  He continues an active involvement in the supervision of clinical research of cardiothoracic trainees.
