As part of NET Cancer Day, Poole-based GP Dr Emma Williams completed a series of running events in aid of PLANETS known as Fit to Fight 2021, beginning with a half marathon before she embarked on a 5k joined by Jo from PLANETS and by more than 100 others on NET Cancer Day itself running distances ranging from 5km to a full marathon! The multiple runs replaced the full marathon she had planned to undertake but was unable to due to a back injury.

In March Emma had major abdominal surgery to remove a NET from her pancreas and recovered more quickly than expected, which she and her clinicians put down to her fitness levels prior to the procedure.

“Before being diagnosed with cancer I completed a diploma in lifestyle medicine to help improve the health of my patients and I practice what I preach so had been staying fit and feeling great,” she explained.

“I was in the best shape of my life when my cancer was diagnosed so my world may have been turned upside down but my “fight” to beat cancer was on and I recovered much quicker than expected, amazing my friends, family, surgeon and, frankly, myself.

“Excellent care definitely made a huge difference to my recovery but so did my fitness.”  She added: “I started with the idea that I would run a marathon to raise money but realised that getting my friends and family fit by walking and running together was equally important.  “By improving their health not only would we prevent disease but also help them recover quicker when and if they needed to win a fight of their own.“

Emma has raised money for both PLANETS and AMEND charities as well as an incredible amount of awareness for neuroendocrine cancer and the importance of being fit when it comes to enduring cancer treatments.
