Colin and Everesting team

Southampton-based cycling enthusiast Colin Zaczyk has completed an extraordinary endurance feat in support of PLANETS Cancer Charity – riding the equivalent height of Mount Everest in less than 24 hours.

Colin took on the ‘Everesting’ challenge on one of the most iconic climbs in cycling – Mont Ventoux in France, nicknamed the “Beast of Provence”.

To reach the 8,848m elevation of the world’s tallest mountain, Colin climbed Mont Ventoux six times in succession, riding through day and night. In doing so, he became one of fewer than 20 Britons to have achieved this feat on Mont Ventoux – and, at 53, the oldest.

The challenge was undertaken in memory of Colin’s mum, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2023. His efforts have so far raised £11,245 (£13,800 including Gift Aid) to help PLANETS support patients with pancreatic, liver, colorectal, oesophageal, gastric and neuroendocrine cancers.

Colin was not completely alone in his epic effort as a dedicated group of friends joined him along the way. Scott Quincey completed all six climbs alongside Colin and was instrumental during months of training.

Colin’s wife Debra joined him for two climbs and also shared the driving of the support van with PLANETS trustee Craig Hoyland, who completed one ascent himself.

The rest of Team Provence contributed a further 10 climbs between them, accompanying Colin on different stages – support he described as “crucial for team morale”.

Reflecting on the challenge, Colin said: “This was far more than a personal test of stamina and endurance – it was my very personal tribute to my amazing mum’s strength, resilience and unwavering spirit.

“There were moments where the exhaustion really hit, but having friends and family alongside me – and my mum’s favourite songs bringing back memories and emotions – gave me an extra level of resolve.

“My mission was to raise funds for PLANETS, who support families like mine facing similar battles. Every penny raised will go directly to helping others and I’m so grateful for every message and donation that kept me pedalling through the day and night.”

Neil Pearce, chairman and co-founder of PLANETS, added: “Mont Ventoux is one of the toughest climbs in cycling, so to do it six times in under 24 hours is simply phenomenal. Colin’s determination, in honour of his mum, is truly inspiring and will make a real difference to the lives of people we support.”
