A dietitian funded by PLANETS Cancer Charity and the Robert White Trust Fund is due to start work to develop and provide a comprehensive dietetic service to patients diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer (NETs).  Ruth Lee will be based at the Dorset NET service, which is part of the Wessex European Neuroendocrine tumour society centre of excellence. Ruth will be working alongside the specialist teams, providing a comprehensive service across the Wessex region, including clinics at a number of South Coast Hospitals, including Poole and Southampton.  This will help ensure that local NET patients get the correct advice and assistance regarding their nutritional requirements, when managing the disease.

Associate Medical Director ,Consultant Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon at Southampton Hospital and Chairman of PLANETS Cancer Charity Neil Pearce said “This is a real step forward in our efforts to provide a comprehensive and holistic, patient centred service for people with this rare type of cancer that so often involves the bowel and digestive organs and requires many treatments that interfere with their function, all of which can lead to chronic nutritional and dietary problems that can be very hard to live with. Having a specialist NET dietitian covering all of these hospitals will put us amongst a tiny number of specialist centres worldwide who are able to provide this kind of service which makes such a difference to the day-to-day lives of these long-term cancer patients.”

Dr Mike Bayne Dorset Clinical Oncologist and Lead for NETs in Dorset. Chair of the Robert White Trust steering group. ‘ Patients with neuroendocrine tumours despite advanced disease may live for many years with difficult symptoms relating to the disease or the treatment of the disease. Many of these symptoms can be helped by dietary intervention so we are very pleased that, thanks to the generosity of Robert White and Planets, we have been successful in making this new appointment offering excellence in dietary management to our patients.’

Newly appointed Ruth Lee said: ‘I am really excited to be taking up this new post working across the Wessex area. It is a great opportunity to make a huge difference to the quality of life of NET patients and ensure that evidence based nutritional advice is available to this patient group. I have previously worked at the Royal Free Hospital in London, another NET centre of excellence with an established dietetic service; therefore I look forward to sharing my knowledge within the Wessex group’
