Patients, clinicians and supporters raised just over £44,000 for PLANETS Cancer Charity at its Moulin Rouge-themed charity ball on Saturday, 19 October.

The event, held at The Grand in Southampton and hosted by comedian Adger Brown, saw more than 180 people attend for a night of comedy, music, food, magic, dancing – and feather boas!

Hampshire-based PLANETS helps patients with pancreatic, liver, colorectal, abdominal (oesophageal and gastric) and neuroendocrine cancer by funding patient support groups and other initiatives, innovative treatments and research.

Since 2011 the charity has raised more than £2 million and delivered achievements including a network of patient support groups across the south coast and the UK’s first mobile electron beam radiotherapy machine based at University Hospital Southampton.

It now aims to raise another £1.5 million over the next five years for a range of projects including additional support for cancer patients, the introduction of pioneering techniques to treat the disease and research to help find better ways of targeting and fighting cancer cells.

During the night, which raised a total of £44,060, PLANETS co-founder Dr Brian Stedman and chairman Neil Pearce gave speeches on some of these achievements, as well as the charity’s future ambitions.

“A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for this year’s ball on Saturday night. It was a spectacular event and so much effort was made by so many people – we are always so grateful for that,” said Jo Green, director of operations and marketing for PLANETS.

“These events are crucial in allowing us to continue supporting patients, funding critical research and providing innovative treatments for patients that are not always available on the NHS.”

Jo added: “None of it would have been possible without some incredible behind-the-scenes support, so a big thanks to all of our supporters, guests, the venue, entertainment acts and, above all, our patients and clinicians, who were out in force and are the reason we do what we do.”
