20-mile walk group photoSupporters and patients have completed a 20-mile walk from Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth to University Hospital Southampton (UHS), raising more than £14,000 for PLANETS Cancer Charity.

The event was led by Clare Norman, from Southampton, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023.

She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and an additional operation during 2024 and, after a hard fought recovery following treatment, she is now cancer-free.

Last year she raised £11,000 for the charity through an online pigeon auction and, determined to do more, she organised the walk with a group of friends and supporters.

Among those who took part was Maria Bunce, a 74-year-old neuroendocrine tumour (NET) patient who completed the full 20 miles.

Clare Gough, from Salisbury, raised £2,230 through sponsorship and they were joined by other participants from Southampton, Poole, and Sunningdale in Windsor.

Jo Green, director of operations and marketing at PLANETS, said: “Clare’s journey highlights the importance of innovation in cancer treatment and her determination to support others is truly inspiring.

“This event brought together patients and supporters to raise vital funds and we are grateful to everyone who took part.

“The money raised will help fund patient support, pioneering treatments and research to improve cancer care.”

The walk included a stop at Sarisbury Green Social Club for lunch before participants continued to UHS. PLANETS now plans to make this an annual event with a new route each year.

PLANETS helps patients with pancreatic, liver, colorectal, abdominal (oesophageal and gastric) and neuroendocrine cancer.

Since 2011, the charity has raised more than £2.5 million, funding patient support, pioneering treatments, and research, including the UK’s first mobile electron beam radiotherapy machine at UHS.

PLANETS aims to raise another £1.5 million over the next five years for further advancements in cancer care.
